Course Sequence

Language Arts 1A & 1B (9th Grade)
This course is focused on the development of the student’s ability to use the writing process in response to a literature-based curriculum. The course will integrate reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Language Arts 1A & 1B Honors (9th Grade) ***
This course is focused on the development of the student’s ability to use the writing process in response to a literature-based curriculum. In the Honors Program, students will be offered challenging literary works emphasizing higher level thinking skills. Honors students will be expected to read and write extensively

Language Arts 2A & 2B (10th Grade)
This course is focused on the development of the student’s ability to use the writing process in response to a literature-based curriculum. This course will integrate reading, writing and speaking.

Language Arts 2A & 2B Honors (10th Grade) ***
This course is focused on the development of the student’s ability to use the writing process in response to a literature-based curriculum. This course will integrate reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students will experience a variety of styles with an emphasis on world literature.

Language Arts 3A & 3B (11th Grade)
This course is focused on the development of the student’s ability to use the writing process in response to a literature-based curriculum. This course will integrate reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students will experience a variety of styles with an emphasis on American literature.

AP Language Arts (11th Grade) ***
An AP course in English Language and Composition engages students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts, and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. This class prepares students to pass the AP English Language and Composition Test.

Expository Reading Writing Course (12th Grade)
(ERWC) is a full year college preparatory English course for high school seniors. The ERWC aligns with the California English Language Arts Content Standards, addresses critical reading and writing problems identified by the CSU English Placement Test Committee and prepares students to meet the expectations of college and university faculty. Organized into 10 modules and 2 fiction novels and based mainly on non-fiction texts, emphasize the in-depth study of expository, analytical and argumentative reading and writing. The University of California has approved the ERWC for area “b” credit (from the “a-g” requirements), and the course meets college preparatory requirements for both the UC and CSU.

AP Language Arts (12th Grade) ***
This course is focused on the preparation of students for college-level literature and writing courses. This course involves college level reading material and subject matter requiring additional time in outside student preparation. The course will include preparation for the Advanced Placement test.
